Hunky Dory 50th Anniversary

This very special limited edition David Bowie album art print celebrates 50 years since the original album release, December 1971. Published by Terry Pastor himself in December 2021, it features a hand applied gold gilt border which lends the image an extra layer of glamour.

David Bowie’s legendary 1970s album covers for Hunky Dory and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, were both designed by Pastor. Ziggy Stardust propelled the flamboyant Bowie to fame in the early 1970s, but it was Hunky Dory on which the artist first impressed the musician.

The Hunky Dory cover began with a black-and-white photograph, the style which was influenced by a Marlene Dietrich photo book that the 24 year old Bowie took with him to the shoot, telling photographer Brian Wood, “this is how I want to look”. The resulting photograph was allegedly taken during one of Bowie’s cigarette breaks.

It was lifted to its position among the greats of album cover art when it was handed to Pastor, who applied colour using photo-dyes with a DeVilbiss Super 93 airbrush. Bowie was so pleased he commissioned the Ziggy Stardust cover using the same techniques.

This beautiful print is limited to only 50 copies. A real treat on the anniversary of the album, and as we enter the year of David Bowie’s 75th birthday.
