Pendulum

This limited edition Ed Caraeff photograph captures Creedence Clearwater Revival in a reflective, almost shadowy composition. The black-and-white aesthetic was not uncommon in album covers during this period of the early 1970’s, conveying a sense of gravitas.

The simplicity of the cover stands in contrast to the band’s earlier albums, which often used more vibrant and colourful artwork. The sepia-toned photograph captures the essence of the band’s rootsy, rock sound while hinting at the more experimental musical directions explored in the album.

While the photograph doesn’t directly reference the album’s title, Pendulum, it can be interpreted as a reflection of the band being at a crossroads. Pendulum was the last album CCR recorded as a quartet. The more serious tone, along with the darker shades and shadowy imagery, might subtly convey the band’s shifting dynamics and internal tensions which would ultimately lead to Tom Fogerty’s departure.

Caraeff shot the session with the band on May 23, 1970, at the Fantasy Records studio in Berkeley, California and carries significance as a group portrait of all four band members: Stu Cook, Tom Fogerty, John Fogerty, and Doug Clifford.
