Ashes to Ashes
Ashes to Ashes In Memory 1947-2016 is based on a shot from the 1971 Hunky Dory photo session. David Bowie’s legendary 1970s album covers for Hunky Dory and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, were both designed by UK illustrator, Terry Pastor.
READ OUR TERRY PASTOR Q&A
Published by Terry Pastor himself, this Oh! You Pretty Things edition has been re-mastered and re-coloured as closely as possible to the original Hunky Dory image that he created in 1972. It began with a black-and-white photograph, the style of which was influenced by a Marlene Dietrich photo book that the 24 year old Bowie took with him to the shoot, telling photographer Brian Ward, “this is how I want to look”.
The resulting photograph was lifted to its position among the greats of album cover art when it was handed to Pastor, who applied colour using photo-dyes with a DeVilbiss Super 93 airbrush. Bowie was so pleased that he commissioned the Ziggy Stardust cover using the same techniques.
Ashes to Ashes In Memory 1947-2016 offers something unique to the David Bowie collector – a image that is instantly recognisable and yet uncommon. A special thing, only one of 30.
