Caribou

This limited edition print celebrates the cover photograph for Elton John’s 1974 album Caribou. An iconic image with an interesting backstory. The cover features Elton John in a striking tiger-striped jacket and black pants, standing in front of a backdrop of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. This backdrop was inspired by the Caribou Ranch recording studio in Colorado, where part of the album was recorded.

The photo shoot was directed by David Larkham, who was influenced by the style of Maxfield Parrish, a painter known for his vibrant and fantastical landscapes1. The backdrop used for the cover was actually a painting by Parrish, which added a surreal and artistic touch to the image.

Photographer Ed Caraeff captured the image, and the shoot involved Elton trying on various outfits before settling on the tiger-striped jacket. The overall aesthetic perfectly reflects the grandeur and rock star persona of Elton John during that period.
