Joe Strummer The Future Is Unwritten
This limited edition screen print of Joe Strummer at The Clash’s first gig is by David Studwell. The print is based on a photograph taken by Julian Yewdall, once a member of Strummer’s previous band, the 101ers.
Studwell works with photographic images, transferring the separated images onto his screens too build up his desired effect. David has coloured each one of these prints by hand, making each print unique.
After being kicked out of the 101ers, Yewdall took up a camera and began photographing Strummer as he started The Clash. This photo was shot backstage at The Clash’s first ever gig at the Royal College of Art on 5th November 1976.
Working with the same print studio and halftone effect as used for the band’s original gig posters, Studwell has paid considered homage to a punk icon and a momentous moment in music history.

Studwell’s practice revolves around celebrity and icons with a touch of nostalgia for the meaning carried still by some of our most revered famous figures.
The pop-style punch comes across here on screen. It is much harder for us to show the beautiful quality of Studwell’s masterful silk screen technique that makes his work so coveted and so well loved by collectors.
