Scratch

Scratch is one of a collection of limited edition archival inkjet prints published to celebrate a catalogue of truly remarkable and unique sound works by Peter Gabriel.

The album cover for Peter Gabriel’s 1978 release was created by the legendary design group Hipgnosis. The cover features a manipulated photograph of Gabriel appearing to scratch away at the surface of the image itself, creating a raw, tactile effect that visually echoed the album’s more stripped-down, edgy sound. The visual metaphor aligned with Gabriel’s desire to break away from the polished aesthetics of his Genesis years and embrace a more personal, unfiltered identity.

The image was achieved using a combination of photographic layering and manual scratching techniques. It epitomises the manual photo-design processes in use by Hipgnosis at the time, in their purest form. Though officially untitled like his other early solo albums, the striking artwork led fans and critics to nickname it Scratch, a title that has since become synonymous with this pivotal moment in Gabriel’s solo evolution.

Scratch comprises two editions: a ‘standard’ size print in an edition of 99 and an XL print in an edition of 25. Every print in this collection has been signed by Peter Gabriel himself.
